Real Men Eat Meat

Not all athletes today are well versed on the subject of diet and nutrition and how it relates to their individual training and particular sport and yet, there is no other sport where diet plays more of a crucial role than boxing. How easily you shed the pounds to make your weight-class could be the deciding factor in how you perform and, ultimately, whether you come out with a win or not. However, this article is as much about weight loss, as it is on a particular compound and how to choose the best products that contain it. The compound I’m referring to is…protein. I’ve covered protein, in general, in past articles but would like to focus more intently a particular source… Meat.

The Ageless Warrior

age is only a number

Boxing history has had a handful of fighters who were able to, not only compete, but reach a high level of success into what most would consider past their prime. The “Ole Mongoose,” Archie Moore, fought late into his forties, George Foreman won the heavyweight title at age forty-five and, more recently, forty-seven year old Bernard Hopkins has gained a great deal of attention for being able to tap into a virtual fountain of youth and show some of today’s young guns, that age really is only a number.  Were these boxers genetically gifted?  Did they have a secret to success for fighting into their golden years? Were they just well-preserved because of their lifestyles outside of the ring?  The answer may be…all of the above?

Juicing for Fast Results

At one point or another, most fighters and athletes find themselves staring at that large supplement shelf in the vitamin store, feeling confused and unsure about their knowledge of health. Because of the wear and tear boxing can have on an individual, it’s important to stay healthy and nutritionally sound. We all understand that we need vitamins and nutrients in our bodies, but knowing the best product or concoction is often confusing and can be completely stressful when faced with so many choices.

Flush the System

According to a recent study published in Obesity, drinking two eight-ounce glasses of water 30 minutes before meals caused participants to drop 44 percent more weight in 12 weeks time than dieting alone. Use this trick, along with a good diet, to feel fuller faster and consume less calories. Most fighters’ instincts, when cutting weight, is to avoid water, but water actually helps flush the system and encourages weight loss.

Supplement Your Diet

As a fighter you have to treat your body like a well-oiled machine and that means fueling it properly. Contrary to the belief that well-balanced meals have all of the vitamins and minerals you need, they don’t.  Regularly taking a multivitamin is the best way to insure that you are receiving all the necessary nutrients that are lacking in your diet. Opt for a brand that is as natural as possible, free of artificial additives and preservatives.
