FALL FISTIC FURY IN THE BRONX
Unbeaten Prospect Sechew Powell Headlines "Boxing in The Bronx" September 19
NEW YORK, September 16 - By giving fighters a chance to fight and fans a chance to check out the best boxing the area has to offer, Final Forum Inc., with three consecutive shows already under its belt, is showing that boxing is back in New York in a big way.
So on September 19, "Boxing in The Bronx" kicks off the Fall season with another high quality show destined to fill the world famous Jimmy's Bronx Cafe.
"With the revamping of the New York State Athletic Commission and having a boxing business pro like Ron Scott Stevens at the helm, monthly shows are now possible - and our team will do its best to make it happen," said Sal Musemeci, President of Final Forum Inc.
This eight-bout card begins at 7:30pm. Doors open at 6:30pm.
In the September 19 main event, highly touted junior middleweight prospect Sechew Powell (9-0, 6 KOs) takes on tough Mexico City native Israel Garcia (5-7, 4 KOs) in a bout scheduled for six rounds. Powell, a two-time National amateur champion who is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, has made a lot of waves in the boxing world in recent months, and with each victory, the accolades for the Brooklynite have gotten louder.
Co-featured on the show will be one of the area's most popular fighters, New York State welterweight champion Kemal Kolenovic (7-1-2, 4 KOs), who squares off against Houma, Louisiana's Steve Verdin (3-15-1) in a non-title six rounder. Kolenovic, a Yugoslavian who has become quite a celebrity in the Albanian community for his action-packed style, is coming off a fourth round stoppage of Fontaine Cabell in June to win the NYS welterweight crown.
Former Golden Gloves champion Francisco Figueroa (2-1) heads up a stellar undercard as he defends Bronx (and Yankee) pride with a six round junior welterweight tiff with Boston-based Irishman Martin Moore (5-12), who will hope to inspire his hometown Red Sox with a win in the Bronx.
Moore will have some company on September 19, as middleweight John Duddy, the pride of County Derry - who now lives in Brooklyn - makes his pro debut on September 19. The highly decorated Irish amateur will face an opponent to be announced shortly in a four rounder.
Always exciting featherweight Pascal Rouse (13-8-2, 9 KOs) of Yonkers, will be in for a tough time in his six rounder with Lakeland, Washington's Angelo Torres (7-5). In his last bout, Rouse dispatched of Jose Ramon Disla in three rounds on August 8.
In a special four round heavyweight attraction, debuting Jose Luis Gomez will battle New Orleans' Raymond Watson (1-2). If you see Gomez and he looks familiar, that's because the native of San Juan is a first cousin of boxing legend Felix Trinidad, and who also served as bodyguard for "Tito" during the former world champion's long reign.
But the intriguing battles don't stop there.
Unbeaten Staten Island junior featherweight Gary Stark, a three-time Golden Gloves champ who is making his New York debut, will put his 5-0 (3 KOs) record on the line when he squares off with Knoxville's Leshaun Blair (2-1) in a matchup scheduled for six.
And opening the show in a junior featherweight four rounder will be hard-hitting San Juan prospect Santos Mercedes (6-0-2, 5 KOs), who takes on Brooklyn's Rodrigo Pastor (0-2).
