OQUENDO KNOCKS OUT SULLIVAN TO BECOME THE NABF CHAMPION

(INSIDE BOXING) Fres Oquendo took Obed Sullivan to school then knocked him out to become the new NABF heavyweight Champion.

Oquendo used old school basics to defeat Sullivan. From the opening round Oquendo established a strong solid Jab and never had to change his format. The Jab consistently scored, connecting at will, out pointing Sullivan and winning all but a couple of rounds.

Oquendo hurt Sullivan in the first round with a right hand to the head and patiently kept his cool. Not going in for the kill, Oquendo kept scoring using his jab to keep Sullivan at bay. Sullivan pressed the fight but could never find a way around the constant jab of Oquendo.

(INSIDE BOXING) From WBC President Jose Sulaiman: "I am very pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached for Oscar De La Hoya of the United States and Roman Karmazin of Russia to fight on December 8, 2001, for De La Hoya's mandatory defense against the No. 1 ranked official challenger, in compliance with the WBC Rules and Regulations.

"The WBC had offered No. 2 ranked Fernando Vargas the opportunity to fight No. 1 Karmazin in a final elimination bout, with the winner being the WBC official challenger for De La Hoya. Karmazin accepted, Vargas did not. Vargas' representatives communicated to me that they preferred a title fight rather than an elimination bout against such a good fighter as Karmazin. They also said that after Vargas fought Shibata Flores, he might then move to fight De La Hoya, to which the WBC expressed that it would not be with our approval if De La Hoya did not first comply with the WBC rules for his mandatory defense, to which all WBC champions are committed.

Outstanding performances is what we get from "SuperMex" Francisco Bojado the 2000 Mexican Olympian.

Bojado advanced his unblemished ring record to 6-0-0 by knocking out former Guyanan and Fecarbox champion Glenn Forde in the second round. All Bojado's victories come by way of knockout. The Bojado vs. Forde was a special six round lightweight bout featured on Showtime Championship Boxing this past Saturday, June 23, 2001.

Bojado used the first round as a feeling out round. In the second round it was time to get busy and get the job done. It was clearly obvious the former Fecarbox champion had no business in the ring with Bojado. Bojado's talent and skill in the ring were far superior than his opponent. A right hand lands to the chin of Forde ending the fight. "I thought he would be wild but he came out calm." Said Bojado "I expected more." -
