Fres Oquendo took Obed Sullivan to school then knocked him out to become the new NABF heavyweight Champion.
Oquendo used old school basics to defeat Sullivan. From the opening round Oquendo established a strong solid Jab and never had to change his format. The Jab consistently scored, connecting at will, out pointing Sullivan and winning all but a couple of rounds.
Oquendo hurt Sullivan in the first round with a right hand to the head and patiently kept his cool. Not going in for the kill, Oquendo kept scoring using his jab to keep Sullivan at bay. Sullivan pressed the fight but could never find a way around the constant jab of Oquendo.
The few times Sullivan would get close enough to unload punches, Oquendo would effectively hold and tie up Sullivan.
Early in the 11th round Oquendo would land his jab, right hand, shoulder and then a solid right hand knocking Sullivan out before he hits the canvass. Referee moves toward Oquendo to stop the fight as Sullivan lay strung out over the ropes.
Felix Trinidad Sr. trains Oquendo and worked the corner.
Olympian Calvin Brock disposed of Lewis Gilbert with a damaging shot to the ribs. Gilbert could not answer the bell for the 2 round. Brad McNeil KO's Nelson Browning in one and Chester Hughes pull an upset win over Ray Sefo. Hughes KO's Sefo in the first round.
