WBC CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMP JUAN CARLOS GOMEZ VACATED TITLE TO CAMPAIGN AT HEAVYWEIGHT

Hamburg – For a very long time cruiserweight world champion Juan Carlos Gomez had the intention to make a move to the heavyweight division. After having defended his WBC title 10 times successfully he made things concrete.

Last Wednesday the 28-year-old Cuban vacated his championship belt of the World Boxing Council and will now campaign exclusively in the heavyweight division.

The second chapter of his career will begin on March 16. On the undercard of the WBO championship between Wladimir Klitschko and Francois Botha in Stuttgart the undefeated Gomez will step into the ring against American Ken Murphy, 21-5 (16 KOs). .

NEW YORK, NY (Feb. 21, 2002) -"ShoBox: The New Generation," returns to the United Kingdom on Saturday, March 2, at 5 p.m. ET/PT with an exciting doubleheader from York Hall, Bethnal Green, in London, England. In the main event, British Commonwealth Light Heavyweight Champion Tony Oakey will take on interim World Boxing Union (WBU) light heavyweight titleholder Andrei Kiarsten for the vacant WBU 175-pound crown. In the co-feature of the Frank Warren-promoted card, World Boxing Council (WBC) International Heavyweight Champion Dennis Bakhtov will defend his crown for the first time when he takes on Mathew Ellis. The telecast is the 12th in a series of "ShoBox: The New Generation" telecasts.

CHOI AND YAMAGUCHI HAVE MADE THE WEIGHT
PREVIEW OF TOMORROW'S WBC 108-POUND TITLE BOUT

February 22, 2002TOKYO, JAPAN-The official weigh-in has been over. The WBC light-fly champ Yosam Choi, Korea, tipped the beam at 108 pounds, the limit of the division, and Japanese Shingo Yamaguchi 106.
The 29-year-old Choi, 23-1, 12 KOs, is a preflight favorite due to his superior experience and power-punching with which he dethroned Thailander Saman Sorjaturong in October, 1999. The Korean recession unfortunately prevented Choi from defending it regularly, and Choi kept his throne just twice during his 28-month reign, beating Chart Kiatpetch (KO5) and ex-champ Saman (KO7) to his credit.
