Boxing Trunks

Every fighter knows that their trunks can say a lot about them. It can be their team colors; it may represent where they come from or symbolize their individuality. This is why having options; a variety of colors, cuts, and styles is so important. Some fighters prefer shorter, more traditional lengths because they like unrestricted freedom of movement. While others may prefer the coverage and comfort of a longer, contemporary cut. Female fighters may also prefer trunks that are made to fit their bodies more naturally. All things considered; it just gives another meaning to the timeless boxing expression that “styles make fights”.

Styles of boxing shorts have changed throughout the decades, as fighters have become more fashion-oriented and want them to clearly reflect their personalities. Fighters have been known to enter the ring in pro boxing trunks made of leather, faux fur, and all types of materials. Unfortunately, those types of choices do not figure into the impact they might have and are not ideal for optimizing performance.

There are countless boxing shorts designs and styles, but the most ideal are constructed of satin or poly satin material. These retain less moisture, sweat, and water which is important because, as a fighter, the less moisture you take on that weighs you down, the easier it is to move around. Every slight advantage you can gain, the better, and by eliminating any excess weight you must carry around throughout the course of the fight, the lighter you stay on your feet. This especially applies to pro boxing trunks, where less restrictions apply than they do to amateur boxing.

The better designed boxing shorts feature a 3”- 4” slit on the outside of each leg to allow for full flexibility. Anything tight, that restricts movement, is a hinderance in the ring. They should also have a 3.5”- 4” wide waistband so that they do not slide back and forth or ride up over your groin protector beneath. Some models even have a drawstring inside the waist to help tighten even more and provide an even greater custom fit.

The length of your boxing shorts should also be a consideration because you do not want them so long that they inhibit your movement. Boxing trunks that extend beyond the length of the knee can sometimes make it harder to bend down or even just serve as a distraction. Shorter trunks that land above the knee or as short as mid-thigh length will not impede your ability to move and bend your legs easily.

Styles, length, and materials have changed over time, as most fashions do. You should always consider how they might affect your performance and always make that your priority.
