The main goal of using a good boxing mouthguard is to provide protection for your teeth, gums, and jaw.

Better mouthguards for boxing also help prevent being knocked out. They are designed to create a slight separation between the back of the jaw and base of your skull. This serves as a sort of “shock-absorber” when you get hit flush with a solid shot.

A boil-and-bite mouthguard provides more of a custom fit and greater protection than a standard rubber boxing mouthguard does. They form around each individual tooth and better maintain that space at the back of your jaw.

Another incredible benefit of a mouthguard was discovered in recent years. A good mouthpiece can potentially make an athlete stronger and faster. By aligning the jaw more properly, your mouthguard can increase athletic performance, improve your energy output, and add to your punching power.

The positive effect of properly positioning your jaw also improves your posture. When your jaw, head, and body are all in alignment, you are not physically and mentally expending energy on trying to balance or counter-balance your head.

Each time you move or are struck, you are unconsciously making minor adjustments that steal your focus when you are not even aware of it. Every movement is taking its toll on your energy levels and focus. When everything is in proper alignment, it minimizes the adjustments that must be made.

In addition to all of that, the need to clench your jaw, in order to hold your mouthpiece in place, improves blood flow to the brain, which translates into improved awareness and greater focus. Biting down on your mouthguard also forces you to breathe through your nose, which helps balance the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in our blood. That translates into better aerobic endurance.

The idea of why you need to wear mouthguards for boxing seems so simple and rudimentary at first, until you look at all the actual science behind it.

While you do not have to use the most expensive, advanced mouthpiece on the market, it is obviously not a piece of protective equipment to cut corners on. The more weight you give it, the greater benefits you will gain in the gym, in training, and in the ring.
