Although most equipment is unisex and designed to work the same for men, women, or kids, female boxing has some unique demands that require women’s boxing gear to be tailored specifically to their bodies.

These items typically revolve around added safety and protecting vulnerable areas that only pertain to women boxers. The category of female boxing gear includes two specific pieces of equipment, which includes female groin protectors and protective sports bras. Both pieces of women’s boxing gear are designed to protect against punches that could be damaging or cause injury. While the chest area is mostly avoided as an unwritten rule between female competitors, some punches occasionally go astray, missing their intended mark. A female chest guard helps lesson the potential impact from an inadvertent blow.

Like men, women also have groin protectors. Men’s groin protectors involve a cup and are more padded than the female boxing version is. Although female groin protectors are not designed the same way, they are meant for the same intention, to provide the same amount of protection as men’s by covering the groin area with an additional layer of foam padding. This helps protect against any punches that land below the waistline, referred to as a “low blow.” Even though those types of punches are illegal, they happen accidentally at times, so groin protectors are required for every athlete, as an extra safety precaution.

Safety and protection from punches that go astray is equally important for anyone competing, regardless of sex, age, or skill level.

Other protective gear including head gear, mouth guards, or hand wraps are designed to fit most men, women, or youth boxers in the same fashion. They don’t need to meet any gender-specific requirements, but fit all user’s demands in the ring in terms of providing additional defense.

Female boxing, in general, has made enormous progress over the past decade in terms of exposure, appreciation, and greater advances in how we approach their boxing equipment.
