Just as there are various types of boxing competition, there are also different styles of gloves to meet an array of needs for each aspect of the sport.

Amateur competition gloves, for instance, typically consist of a multi-layer foam padding that provides more protection than professional boxing gloves do. Each glove contains a combination of open cell foam padding for impact absorption, along with closed cell foam padding to disperse the force of impact. Amateur boxing gloves are also made in either 10-ounce or 12-ounce sizes, so there is more padding to protect the fighter from cuts, bruises, and potential physical damage. They can be constructed of synthetic or genuine leather, and most commonly have an elastic closure around the wrist. This is for safety purposes so there is less likelihood of laces or Velcro scratching either fighter.

Professional boxing gloves, on the other hand, take safety into account but are also designed to enhance action, reinforce power punching, and allow the fighters to feel more of the impact. Pro boxing gloves can be constructed of a variety of foams and other materials, including closed cell padding, open cell padding, sponge rubber foam, poly fibers, and even horsehair. The type of foam or contents used in pro boxing gloves impacts the weight of the gloves, which must meet the required 8-ounce or 10-ounce regulation sizes. In both amateur and professional boxing competitions, the size or weight of the gloves is determined by the weight category the athlete fights in. For instance, a lightweight fighter would wear 8-ounce gloves, while a heavyweight would wear 10-ounce gloves. The larger man requires more padding to maintain a certain level of protection and safety. It is encouraged by most boxing commissions for the professional boxing gloves used to be made from leather, due to its added durability.

All levels of boxing fighting gloves should be designed to protect the athlete’s hands, head, and body from unnecessary punishment. Boxing is a demanding sport and is only at its best when the competitor’s safety is always the top priority.
