How Much of Your Body is Water?
Water makes up a large percentage of the human body. When you break it down and examine each part individually, you can quickly see how important hydration is to proper athletic function and sports performance.
So let's look at each body part and how their “water-health” correlates with what you do in the ring.
75% of your brain - A boxers' brain is prone to injury when water, the primary cushioning substance, is depleted or lacking. Your brain is made up of approximately 100 billion nerve cells. They create better impact absorption from punches and contact when those cells are full of water and healthy.
79% of your heart - During exercise the heart's role is to supply the working muscles with sufficient energy and oxygen. If not given enough water, the heart will not produce as much oxygen, not produce it as quickly and cardiovascular performance will falter.
76% of your muscles - These are the tools you rely on every day in training. Not giving them enough water is like holding back water from a plant and still expecting it to grow and be green. That's simply not realistic. Your muscles are made up of cells. Cells are made up of water. Cells that go thirsty, can't feed muscle growth, development and performance. Your muscles make it happen and can only produce the KO when they're given enough H20.
83% of your blood - While working out, blood flowing through the muscles of the body can increase by as much as 15 to 20 times (compared to muscles that are at rest). Without an adequate amount/quality of blood flowing to your working cells and tissues, you will fatigue and fade much faster than if you were well-hydrated.
72% of your skin - Well-hydrated skin has more elasticity, which makes it less susceptible to injury or sustaining cuts.
22% of your bones - Fighting involves a great deal of skeletal contact and strong bones are needed to absorb impact. The stronger your bones are, the greater force you can deliver with.
When you see how much of the human anatomy is made up of water and what percentage it holds in a boxer's physical make-up, it puts a whole new perspective on proper hydration. Water is a big part of you and can play an even a bigger part in quenching your thirst for success.
