While a basic elastic hand wrap does the job during training, most competitions require boxing tape and gauze for wrapping hands. Boxing tape and gauze work in a similar fashion, but its lightweight, porous design allows the combination to be more form fitting. Several layers of gauze are used to secure the joints and ligaments in the hand, then an additional layer of tape holds the gauze in place and in the correct position.
The gauze / tape combination provides a more contoured covering of a fighter’s fists and, when done properly, allows the fighter to deliver his punches with full confidence, knowing their hands are well protected.
There are many ways to use gauze and tape for boxers to protect their hands during competition. Every coach or trainer may have different techniques to get the best wrap, but the overall objective is the same; to keep your fighter from injuring the most important asset he or she has, their fists. It is important for every coach to understand the proper mechanics of wrapping hands and for their fighters to know what feels good when they are put to use.
Some athletes use boxing tape and gauze in training, in place of traditional cotton hand wraps. While it is certainly not as affordable as cotton wraps that can be reused and washed regularly, it’s a practice that can have some benefits in the days leading up to actual competition. Wrapping with boxing tape and gauze in final preparations can help get the fighter in the right frame of mind to fight, replicating the real pre-fight experience and allowing them to get used to the combination of the gauze / tape layers and its different feel.
Wrapping right for training and in competition requires using the correct materials for each. Both have their own unique demands that traditional hand wraps or tape and gauze meet to allow all athletes to perform at their best.
